Jackie found these embroidered blocks that her mother, Ella, had done. Ella passed in 1995 and never had a chance to finish the quilt. As we looked over the blocks, the beauty of her stitches overwhelmed me and I prayed one day I could mimic her precision. Each block is a US State with the state bird and flower, along with the year it came into the Union. The entire extended family loves stars, so we incorporated those as well.
The entire time I was working on this quilt, I felt this warm, comforting feeling. It was as if Ella was saying thank you for finishing this quilt for me. We placed the information of each State on the back of the quilt, for those who have the pleasure of seeing it. What an honor it was to finish this for them.
